Change is the only constant in life. For decades, PG Diploma programs lacked quality and gained only negative publicity. They were frowned upon by Employers, and sometimes even faculty. Then hit the evolution! Come 2016, Canada had garnered attention of masses looking to move here and start a new life.
Many immigrants who came here felt a need of Canadian experience, before they join the workforce. Some started with Bridging programs, while others felt a need for proper enhancement of skills and hence, full time academic programs. Since they already had Master’s degree or equivalent from back home, and were looking for short term as well as cheaper programs – PG Diplomas made perfect sense.
Many new immigrants started enrolling into PG Diploma & Certificate programs. Some provinces had a support system in place which enabled the immigrants to study full time without a financial stress, through provincial funding. PG Diploma programs were changing, gaining attention and students. New curriculums and updated program delivery begun to surface. A pleasant change was finally here!
By 2018, these programs became so famous that even top Universities like McGill, York, Vancouver Island, Fraser Valley and Cape Breton started introducing them. These programs are 8 months to 2 years in length, come with a benefit of specialized curriculum & training, and give the students a golden touch of Canadian Experience. More importantly, they get a chance to settle down and do their networking for building a new career. These programs have different names in some provinces – Post Baccalaureate Diploma, Graduate Certificate, Post Graduate Diploma, etc. In essence, all made up with a goal to provide market ready skills. No wonder Employers love them now!
Come 2019, the CRS cut off in Express Entry started hovering over 450 consistently. By the end of 2019, the Golden Era of Express Entry was far behind, and FSW candidates below 460 had little hope. Every point is precious in the pool. The candidates had to look for ways to add extra points to their CRS score in the pool. Canadian Education presented a way that makes sense to most such candidates, who need to immigrate legally and with confidence.
PG Diploma from an eligible institution gives candidates 2 significant benefits in their Immigration aspirations:
- 15 extra CRS points
- Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) of up to 3-years to gain invaluable Canadian Experience
This effectively means that applicants missing the cut off by even 10-15 points can now come to Canada as a student, complete their program in as quickly as 8-months, earn those brownie points and get invited for Permanent Residence. The applicants that need more points can earn them through Canadian Work Experience – gained through working in skilled jobs while on PGWP. A single applicant earns 40 points in CRS for 1-year skilled work experience in Canada, while a married applicant earns 35 points. Enough to make a difference!
Is this route for everyone?
While this is an excellent route, there are 2 important considerations before you jump the gun:
- Do you need this route?
- Do you qualify for this route?
Answer to these questions is not easy and requires personal assessment to decipher. Can anyone decipher it? Ask yourself, you know the answer.
