Types of Work permit in Canada
There are different types of work permits issued in Canada. Below are the most common types, however it is not an exhaustive list. There are other program specific work permits such as those issued in provincial business immigration programs, caregiver streams, and to people working in health related fields.
1. Open work permit
Allows the holder to work for any employer. In some cases, there might be certain conditions imposed that will restrict field of work, or geography where the person is allowed to work. Open work permit is usually issued to:
- Spouses of skilled workers, full time students or applicants of Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program
- Workers who applied for Permanent Residence in Canada before expiry of their work permit, also known as Bridging open work permit (BOWP)
- Family members of permanent residents (once sponsorship application is submitted)
- Vulnerable worker or destitute student
- Temporary residence permit holder
- Refugees, refugee claimants, Protected persons or their family members
2. Closed work permit
More common form of work permit, issued to people with employment offer from a Canadian Employer. The employment offer should be supported with a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) issued by ESDC. This type of work permit restricts the applicant to work for a specific employer in Canada.
3. Post Graduate work permit
This is a type of Open Work Permit, issued to students who complete their Canadian education from a public institute in Canada that is designated to provide PGWP eligible programs.
Eligibility requirements
Other than meeting the specific eligibilities listed above, there are some basic requirements to be met before you can apply for a work permit for Canada:
- You need to be admissible to Canada, under the Immigration & Refugee Protection Act
- You must be able to prove to an officer that you will leave Canada when your work permit expires
- Not work for an employer who offers services in striptease, erotic massages or adult services.
- Meet other country specific requirements, if any
- If you are applying from within Canada, you must be on a valid status (other than visitor, or Super Visa)
